A Brief History of Zoloft Birth Defects

Posted on June 3rd, 2011 No Comments

The United States Food and Drug Administration has recently issued warnings about a potential link between Zoloft and birth defects.

In 2006, the agency first added warnings about a potential risk of birth defects from Zoloft. The FDA linked Zoloft, and other antidepressants, to persistant pulmonary hypertension in newborns. The side effects of Zoloft were linked to a risk six times greater than that of other, similar medications.

In June 2007, studies found a link between the use of Zoloft during early pregnancy and a risk of abnormal skull development. Zoloft use during early pregnancy was also linked to gastrointestinal abnormalities and brain defects in newborns around this time.

A study published in the British Medical Journal in 2009 linked antidepressants like Zoloft, known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, with an increased risk of congenital heart defects. This risk was especially high for newborns whose mothers used Zoloft during the first trimester.
