Depression is present in one out of 16 people

Posted on November 21st, 2011 No Comments

A study conducted in Singapore has revealed that one in 16 individuals will suffer from depression in their lifetime.

The Institute of Mental Health conducted this $6.9 million survey which evaluated individuals for symptoms of depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and overuse of alcohol.

A significant disconnect was discovered between the realization of suffering from depression and seeking help for the condition. The doctors issuing the survey found that there were three reasons why people wait so long to receive help. These reasons are: not knowing the condition exists, feeling ashamed and inaccessibility to aid.

When talking to a doctor about depression, a common treatment that is suggested is the use of antidepressants.

The antidepressant, Zoloft, has been prescribed to treat the symptoms of depression. Recently, this drug has been linked to severe birth defects. If you were prescribed Zoloft during pregnancy and your child developed a birth defect, please contact the Zoloft birth defect lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-641-9810 today.
