Study: Birth defects linked to development of childhood cancer

Posted on May 31st, 2012 No Comments

A study was recently done that showed the link between children born with birth defects and the development of childhood cancer, with a particular emphasis on this happening in the first year of the child’s life .

Although, there has not been research done on which condition causes the other,  researchers have stated that children born birth defects, including down syndrome and cleft palates, are three times more likely to develop cancer.

According to Fox News, researchers studied a database of children born between 1996 and 2005 and found that of the three million  babies born, four percent(116,000) were born with at least one birth defect.

Out of all of the kids, 2,350 were diagnosed with cancer and 239 of these children were born with a birth defect. Although researchers have discovered a link between the diagnosis of leukemia and children who have Down syndrome, there has been no clear link between any other type of cancer.
