Study: Herbicide linked to development of birth defect

Posted on October 2nd, 2012 No Comments

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine have completed a study that links a common herbicide known as atrazine to the development of birth defects.

Atrazine is the most widely used herbicide in the U.S., typically utilized for corn crops. The study found that women who live in counties where this herbicide is used the most are 80 percent more likely to give birth to a child with either choanal atresia or stenosis.

Choanal atresia is a defect where tissue blocks a child’s nasal passage on one or both sides of the airway. If a child is born with this condition, doctors may need to resuscitate the baby upon delivery. Surgery may also be required to remove the obstructing tissue.

Birth defects can be devastating as well as costly for a family. If your child developed a birth defect after you were prescribed an antidepressant such as Zoloft during pregnancy, contact the birth defect lawsuit lawyers of Williams Kherkher today by calling 800-641-9810.
