Zoloft and Congenital Heart Defects

Use of the prescription drug Zoloft by pregnant women has been linked to a congenital heart defects.

A congenital heart defect is a birth defect in the structure of the heart and great vessels. There are many different types of heart defects, but commonly the blood flow in the heart of vessels near it is obstructed. Some heart defects cause blood to flow through the heart in an abnormal pattern. Other heart defects affect the hearts rhythm.

Congentital heart defects are among the most common birth defects and are the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths. Signs and symptoms of congenital heart defects relate to the type and severity of the condition. Some affected children show no symptoms.
