Zoloft Birth Defects: Coarctation of the Aorta

Posted on July 27th, 2011 No Comments

A number of birth defects have recently been linked to the prescription drug Zoloft, including coarctation of the aorta.

Coarctation of the aorta, or aortic coarctation, is a narrowing of the aorta, the large blood vessel which branches off the heart. The aorta delivers oxygen-rich blood to the body, but when aortic coarctation occurs, the heart must pump harder to force blood to move through the narrow portion of the aorta. Coarctation of the aorta may range from mild to severe, and in some cases may not be detected until adulthood – depending on how narrowed the aorta is.

Coarctation of the aorta often occurs along with other heart defects. While treatment for aortic coarctation is usually successful, the condition requires careful follow-up through infancy and likely throughout adulthood.

Coarctation of the aorta occurs mostly in men and boys and is a fairly common birth heart defect. Treatment options depend on the age of the patient. There are several open-heart surgical techniques to repair aortic coarctation, such as removing the narrowed segment, incising and patching the narrowed portion of the aorta, or expanding the narrowed segment with another blood vessel.

If your child was born with a birth defect, such as coarctation of the aorta, and you were prescribed Zoloft while pregnant, you may be entitled to compensation. To speak with a Zoloft Birth Defect Attorneys, please contact Williams Kherkher by calling 800-641-9810.
