Zoloft Birth Defects: Craniosynostosis

Posted on April 28th, 2011 No Comments

Recent studies have linked the prescription drug Zoloft to a number of birth defects, including Craniosynostosis.

Craniosynostosis is a condition in which the fibrous sutures of an infant’s skull prematurely fuse by ossification. “Cranio” refers to the upper portion of the skull, “syn” to together, and “ostosis” to the genesis of bone.

The premature fusing of the fibrous sutures changes the growth pattern of the skull. The skull cannot expand normally and the resulting growth pattern, while providing necessary space for the brain, results in an abnormal head shape. In certain cases, the fused sutures do not provide enough space for the brain leading to increased intracranial pressure. This pressure could cause visual impairment or an impairment of mental development.
