Zoloft Birth Defects: Ebstein’s Anomaly

Posted on June 29th, 2011 No Comments

The prescription drug Zoloft has recently been linked to variety of birth defects, including Ebstein’s Anomaly.

Ebstein’s anomaly is a rare congenital defect that affects the right side of the heart. The disorder occurs when the tricuspid valve, which divides the two chambers of the right side of the heart, does not form correctly. The tricuspid valve would normally separate the right atria and right ventricle, however, with Ebstein’s anomaly, the valve forms too far down in the ventricle.

The defect makes the right ventricle smaller and weaker than normal. Typically, there is also a connection between the left and right atrea. The tricuspid valve which usually has two or three independently moving parts, will commonly feature one or two parts that stick to the walls of the heart and/or do not move properly. This allows for blood to leak back into the heart.

The birth defect is named after Wilhelm Ebstein, a German physician who first identified the condition.

If you used Zoloft while pregnant and your child was born with Ebstein’s anomaly or another congenital defect, please contact a Zoloft Birth Defect Attorney of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-641-9810.
