Zoloft Birth Defects: Tethered Spinal Cord Syndrome

Posted on August 10th, 2011 No Comments

Recent studies have linked the prescription antidepressant Zoloft to a variety of birth defects, including tethered spinal cord syndrome.

Tethered spinal cord syndrome, also known as occult dysraphism sequence, is a neurological disorder characterized by attachments that limit the movement of the spinal cord within the spinal column. These attachments cause an abnormal stretching of the spinal cord. The lower tip of the spinal cord is normally located opposite the disc between the first and second lumbar vertebrae in the upper part of the lower back. In people with tethered spinal cord syndrome, however, the spinal cord fails to separate from the skin of the back during development, preventing it from ascending normally, so the spinal cord is low-lying and tethered.

Although the skin is separated and closed at birth, the spinal cord remains in the same location after the closure. As the child continues to grow, the spinal cord is stretched, causing damage and interference with blood supply to the spinal cord.

Children with tethered spinal cord syndrome may exhibit one or all of the following symptoms:

–          Lesions on the lower back

–          Skin discoloration on the lower back

–          Hairy patch on the lower back

–          Fatty tumor on the lower back

–          Deep dimple on the lower back

–          Back pain

–          Leg pain

–          Leg numbness or tingling

–          Curvature of the spine (scoliosis)

–          Bowel and bladder problems

–          Spine tenderness

–          Deterioration in gait
