Zoloft Birth Defects: Transposition of the Great Arteries

Posted on July 20th, 2011 No Comments

Recent studies have linked the prescription drug Zoloft with a number of birth defects, including transposition of the great arteries.

Transposition of the great arteries is a rare heart defect preset at birth, in which the two main arteries leaving the heart are reversed, or transposed. Transposition of the great arteries changes how blood circulates through the body, leaving a shortage of oxygen in blood flowing from the heart to the rest of the body. As a result of this inadequate supply of oxygen-rich blood, the body cannot function properly.

Transposition of the great arteries is usually detected within the first week of life, if not in the delivery room. Symptoms of this birth defect include:

–          Shortness of breath

–          Lack of appetite

–          Poor weight gain

–          Blue color of the skin

If signs did not appear in the hospital, seek immediate medical help if your newborn has developed any symptoms of transposition of the great arteries.

If you used Zoloft while pregnant and your child has suffered a birth defect, please contact the Zoloft Injury Lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-641-9810.
