Zoloft Birth Defects: Truncus Arteriosus

Posted on June 23rd, 2011 No Comments

The prescription drug Zoloft has been linked to a number of congenital heart defects, including truncus arteriosus.

Truncus arteriosus, also known as persistent truncus arteriosus, is a rare heart defect that is present at birth. A child born with truncus arteriosus will have one large vessel leading out of the heart, instead of two separate vessels. Additionally, the two lower chambers of a child’s heart will be missing a portion of the wall that divides them. As a result of the fused vessels, oxygen-rich blood meant for the heart and oxygen-poor blood meant for the lungs are mixed together, which creates severe circulatory problems.

Signs and symptoms of truncus arteriosus develop in the first weeks of life. Common symptoms include:

–          Cyanosis

–          Poor growth

–          Dyspnea

–          Tachypnea

–          Arrhythmia

If truncus arteriosus is left untreated, the condition is usually fatal during the first year of life. Surgery to repair the heart and blood vessels is generally performed before the child is two months-old.
