The History of Zoloft

In 1991, pharmaceutical giant Pfizer released its anti-depressant drug Zoloft. After passing Food and Drug Administration testing, Zoloft was approved as a treatment for major depression. In subsequent years, the approved uses for Zoloft would grow to include several panic disorders.

Zoloft, though initially thought to be relatively harmless, may trigger severe side effects in some people. If you or someone you love suffered a severe side effect from taking the anti-depressant Zoloft, contact the Zoloft lawsuit lawyers of Williams Kherkher today at 800-641-9810.

Zoloft Timeline

Early in its life, Zoloft breezed through drug approval tests in several nations. By the mid-1990s, it was one of the most widely prescribed drugs to treat depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and other panic disorders.

Recent studies have shown, however, that pregnant women who took Zoloft in the first trimester were twice as likely to have a baby born with a serious birth defect (including heart, cranial, and neural tube defects) than women who did not take the drug during pregnancy.

The FDA mandated that Pfizer place warning labels on Zoloft to inform people of the possible dangers of taking the drug in 2005. The drug is currently carries a Class C classification, due to the potential harm it can cause a fetus. Despite the warnings and effects, Zoloft remains a popular anti-depressant on the market.
