Link between antidepressants and newborn lung disorder discovered

Posted on January 18th, 2012 No Comments

A new study has been conducted by researchers that shows an increased risk of newborns suffering from neonatal pulmonary hypertension when their mothers were taking antidepressants in the last months of pregnancy.

The study consisted of data compiled from 1.6 million births. This disorder causes the lungs of infants to not fully open, thus causing problems with the flow of blood and oxygen. There were 30,000 women in the study who were taking antidepressants during their pregnancy and 11,000 of them refilled their prescriptions towards the end of their pregnancy.

The results of these numbers determined that out of every 1,000 babies born to these women on antidepressants, three of them suffered from neonatal pulmonary hypertension. This amount is said to be more than double what would have been expected in the general population.

Zoloft is an antidepressant that is commonly prescribed for the treatment of depression. If you were taking Zoloft while pregnant and your child developed a birth defect, please contact the Zoloft birth defect lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-641-9810 today.
