Research shows decreased levels of vitamin D connected to depression

Posted on January 12th, 2012 No Comments

A study was conducted that involved 12,600 participants, ranging in age from 20 to 90. The participants had their levels of vitamin D monitored through their blood and were asked to talk about any symptoms of depression they felt.

The report indicated that individuals with lower levels of vitamin D in their bloodstream were more likely to experience symptoms of depression. This relationship grew in strength among the patients who had a history of depression.

The connection between the two factors in this study is still uncertain. The Institute of Medicine did increase the recommended dosage for vitamin D to 600 international units a day for people ages 1 to 70.
