Study finds new way of prescribing depression medication

Posted on January 4th, 2012 No Comments

A study conducted at Loyola University has found a new way of prescribing depression medication to individuals.

A blood test in which the levels of a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF, were measured greatly determined the success of particular antidepressants in each patient. The study shows that by measuring the existence of VEGF in individuals, researches were able to find out the effectiveness of antidepressants, including Zoloft, in 85 percent of patients before they actually consumed the medication.

This discovery can potentially eliminate the use of multiple antidepressants in individuals trying to determine which one works best for them. A simple blood test could accurately determine the right antidepressant for each patient.

Zoloft is an antidepressant medication that has commonly been prescribed. It has been linked to several birth defects in newborns following use during pregnancy. If you were taking Zoloft during your pregnancy and your child developed a birth defect, please contact the Zoloft birth defect lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-641-9810 today.
