Study finds that two thirds of women take medication during pregnancy

Posted on December 21st, 2011 No Comments

A study conducted by researchers at the University of British Columbia found that two thirds of women are taking prescription medication during their pregnancy. There were 163,082 pregnancies between 2001 and 2006 that were included in the study.

Approximately 63.5 percent of them filled a prescription while they were pregnant. One in thirteen women were consuming prescription medication that had a certain degree of risk to the unborn child. These risky drugs fall into two separate categories; ones with a fetal risk but with larger benefits to the mother and those whose benefits did not override the harmful effects to the fetus.

Depression is often treated during pregnancy by prescribing medication. Medication to treat depression falls into the category of drugs whose fetal risks outweigh potential benefits.

Zoloft is a prescription drug used to treat depression and has been linked to numerous birth defects. If you were taking Zoloft while pregnant and your child was born with a birth defect, please contact the Zoloft birth defect lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-641-9810 today.
