Zoloft listed as defendant in 19 West Virginia lawsuits

Posted on September 6th, 2012 No Comments

Nineteen plaintiffs have filed lawsuits against the maker of Zoloft after claiming that the use of this antidepressant during pregnancy caused their children to develop serious birth defects.

The plaintiffs are seeking punitive and compensatory damages for the suffering their children have endured as well as for the costs of surgeries and ongoing medical care.

The families have listed multiple birth defects in the lawsuits, including septal and atrial heart defects, neural tube defects, cleft lips and palates, and persistent pulmonary hypertension.

Zoloft was placed on the market in 1991 in order treat depression. It was later approved to treat anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder. Since then, studies have shown that the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor may be linked to the development of birth defects when ingested during pregnancy.
